Ababilnews - The cause of cancer usually cannot be known with certainty because the cause of cancer can be a combination of a number of factors, genetic and environmental. However, there are several factors that are thought to increase the risk of cancer, as follows:
 |
How Cause Cancer, So You Know How To Prevent It |
Heredity
Genetic factors cause some families to have a higher risk of developing certain cancers when compared to other families. Types of cancer that tend to run in families are breast cancer, ovarian cancer, skin cancer and colon cancer. For example, a woman's risk of developing cancer increases 1.5 to 3 times if her mother or sister has breast cancer.
Environmental factor
- Cigarette smoking increases the risk of developing cancer of the lung, mouth, larynx (vocal cords), and bladder.
- Ultraviolet rays from the sun
- Ionizing radiation (which is carcinogenic) used in X-rays generated from nuclear power plants and atomic bomb explosions that can reach great distances. For example, survivors of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II had a high risk of developing blood cell cancers, such as leukemia.
Food factors that contain chemicals.
Food can also be another important risk factor for cancer, especially cancer of the digestive tract. Examples of types of foods that can cause cancer are:
- Smoked and pickled foods (in the form of pickles) increase the risk of developing stomach cancer.
- Drinks that contain alcohol have a higher risk of esophageal cancer.
- Food coloring agents
- Heavy metals such as mercury which are often found in contaminated seafood such as: shellfish, fish, etc.
- Various foods (sweet, flour) that are over-processed.
Virus
Viruses that can and are suspected of causing cancer include:
- Papilloma virus causing genital warts (genitalis) is likely one of the causes of cervical cancer in women.
- Cytomegalo virus causes Kaposi's sarcoma (cancer of the blood vessel system characterized by red skin lesions).
- Hepatitis B virus can cause liver cancer.
- Epstein - Bar virus (in Africa) causes Burkitt Lymphoma, while in China it causes nose and throat cancer. This happens due to environmental and genetic factors.
- Retro viruses in humans such as HIV virus causes lymphoma and other blood cancers.
Infection
- Schistosoma parasites (bilharzia) can cause bladder cancer due to chronic irritation of the bladder. But the cause of other annual irritation do not lead to cancer.
- Infection by Clonorchis which causes cancer of the pancreas and bile duct.
- Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that may be the cause of gastric cancer, and it is suspected that this bacterium causes chronic gastric injury and inflammation resulting in an increase in cell cycle speed.
Behavioral factors
- The behavior in question is smoking and consuming foods that contain lots of fat and preserved meat as well as drinking alcoholic beverages.
- Sexual behavior, namely having intimate relationships at an early age and often changing partners.
Hormonal balance disorders
The hormone estrogen functions to stimulate cell growth which tends to encourage cancer, while progesterone protects the occurrence of excessive cell growth. - There is a tendency that excess estrogen and progesterone deficiency lead to increased risk of breast cancer, cervical cancer, uterine cancer and prostate and testicular cancer in men.
Psychological factors, emotional
Severe stress can cause disruption of the body's cellular balance. This constant tense state can affect cells, where the cells become hyperactive and change their nature to become malignant, causing cancer.
Free radicals
A free radical is an atom, group of atoms, or molecule that has unpaired free electrons in its outer circle. Sources of free radicals, namely:
- Free radicals are formed as a byproduct of metabolic processes.
- Free radicals enter the body in the form of chemical toxins from food, drink, polluted air, and ultraviolet rays from the sun.
- Free radicals are produced excessively when we eat excessively (have an impact on metabolic processes) or when we are under excessive stress, either physically, psychologically or biologically.
